New app enables divers to chart marine litter levels

Underwater conservation organisation Project AWARE has launched a new smartphone apps that allows divers and users of the sea to record information on marine litter and debris they come into contact with.

A study published last year by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation found that entanglement is the greatest risk for marine life created by plastic pollution and in 2016 alone, divers reported 1,624 entangled marine animals during surveys for Project AWARE.

The new app will use geolocation to track the latitude and longitude of the debris and will then pass on the data to a central system, which will be used to inform academic bodies and conservation organisations.
