Government should focus on single-use packaging reduction over recycling, say MPs

UK MPs have called on the government to focus on reducing all single-use packaging, rather than switching to alternative materials such as compostable plastic packaging.

MPs on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee in Parliament have released a report on plastic food and drink packaging, which states: ‘‘The government is not placing enough emphasis on reducing plastic food and drink packaging in the first place. Reduction is far more important than recycling and a fundamental shift away from all single-use packaging, plastic or otherwise, is now necessary.’

The report expresses concern over the drive to replace single-use plastic packaging with alternative materials that may have similarly detrimental environmental consequences, singling out compostable and biodegradable plastic packaging in particular, saying that there is public confusion over how to deal with such packaging and there is inadequate infrastructure to deal with it in the UK.
