Defra to extend plastic bag charge in England

The UK Government has extended the single-use plastic bag charge in England to retailers of all sizes and doubled the levy from five pence to 10 pence.

The changes will be implemented from April 2021, and will aim to incentivise greater uptake of long-lasting reusable bags at the checkout.

Since the plastic bag charge was introduced in England in 2015, the sales of single-use plastic bags have fallen by 95 per cent, with the average person in England buying four bags a year, compared to 140 in 2014.
