Halloween campaign to save 12.8 million pumpkins from waste

Hubbub has embarked on its annual Halloween campaign, ‘Eat Your Pumpkin’, to teach citizens about reducing seasonal food waste. This year, although 30 per cent less households will be going trick or treating, 12.8 million pumpkins will still be wasted, reveals new research by environmental charity Hubbub.

The latest figures suggest only 42 per cent of people who celebrate Halloween are aware that carving pumpkins from the supermarket are edible.

In a questionnaire of 3,000 UK residents, Hubbub discovered that 24 million pumpkins are estimated to be carved this year but over half (12.8 million) of these will not be eaten, enough to make a bowl of pumpkin soup for every single person in Britain.
