Mater-Bi

About Mater-Bi

Mater-Bi is the first biodegradable and compostable bioplastic developed and produced on an industrial scale in Italy, made from raw materials that are wholly or partly derived from plant-based sources.

Born from more than thirty years of Novamont research and innovation, Mater-Bi was developed to provide concrete solutions to to some of the main environmental challenges, including organic waste management and the reduction of soil pollution in agriculture.

Mater-Bi bioplastic, combined with paper, represents an innovative solution for developing more sustainable packaging for the food sector.

Mater-Bi features a verified carbon footprint. Thanks to the ISO 14067 certification obtained by Novamont, the carbon footprint (CFP) of products made from Mater-Bi can be clearly and transparently measured and quantified.
Using Mater-Bi in manufacturing provides robust final data to support claims of increased sustainability, accurately calculated by third parties and certified by accredited bodies.
Beyond measurement and verification, Novamont is continuously working on developing processes and technological solutions with the ambition of minimizing Mater-Bi’s carbon footprint throughout its entire life cycle. This approach integrates process innovation, raw material selection, and continuous improvement of environmental impact.

All Mater-Bi applications are certified OK COMPOST in accordance with the UNI EN 13432 standard and comply with the European Directive on packaging and packaging waste.
Depending on the specific formulation, Mater-Bi applications can be:
• Compostable in industrial composting facilities, with complete biodegradation within approximately 6 months, in accordance with EN 13432 (and ISO 17088, ISO 14855);
• Compostable in home composting, with biodegradation within approximately 12 months, in accordance with EN 17427;
• Biodegradable in soil, with complete mineralization within a approximately of 24 months, in accordance with EN 17033 and ISO 17556.
In all cases, biodegradation results in the conversion of the material into CO₂, water, and biomass, without the forming of persistent microplastics in the environment. Furthermore, tests carried out so far show that Mater-Bi is intrinsically biodegradable and that, in the presence of marine microorganisms, it achieves levels of biodegradation comparable to those of natural polymers such as cellulose (paper).

Mater-Bi is the optimal choice for those seeking a material that combines high product quality with efficient use of resources. Mater-Bi is a high-performance material, comparable to traditional materials, and at the same time biodegradable and compostable. It allows for various recycling options and ensures compliance with ecotoxicity requirements.
It also ensures full compliance with current regulations and material performance requirements, making it a reliable and more sustainable bioplastic, thanks to the evolution of the different generations of Mater-Bi, for anyone looking for high performance in use without compromising their environmental responsibility commitments thanks to the plant-based raw materials used via a circular approach.
