CARRIER BAGS
Carrier bags made of Mater-Bi are designed to offer a practical and hygienic solution for organic waste collection, after being used for shopping.
Thanks to their renewable origin and their biodegradability and compostability, Mater-Bi carrier bags can be used again after shopping to dispose of organic waste.
How to recognise legally compliant carrier bags?
Compostable
bags
Reusable carrier bags must be very thick to last a long time and be reused repeatedly.
Reusable carrier bags that satisfy the following legal requirements are compliant:
• External handle: 200 micron for food use: must contain 30% recycled plastic. 100 micron for other uses: must contain 10% recycled plastic.
• Internal handle: 100 micron for food use: must contain 30% recycled plastic. 60 micron for other uses: must contain 10% recycled plastic.
Warning!
Carrier bags that do not have these compostability or reusability/composition characteristics are not legally compliant and high financial penalties are imposed on anyone selling them or giving them away for free.
Examples of non-compliance:
All single-use carrier bags with non-compostable external handles (i.e. which do not have logos certifying UNI EN 13432 standard compliance) with the following wording:
• “Biodegradable within 3-5 years” or “in the medium-long term”;
• “Biodegradable in accordance with the UNI EN ISO 14855 method”;
• “ECM biodegradable”, “D2W®”, “oxo-biodegradable2 or “oxo-degradable”;
• “Protect nature” “I am an ecological bag” “Nature is important to us”.
