Mater-Bi

Certifications

Mater-Bi bioplastic is certified and guaranteed both during use and at end of life, and helps raise benchmark standards across the sector.

Biodegradability and Compostability

All grades within the Mater-Bi bioplastics family are biodegradable and compostable in compliance with the European standard UNI EN 13432, the leading technical reference for producers of compostable materials, public authorities, composting operators, certification bodies, and consumers.

Depending on the specific formulation, Mater-Bi application can be:

Industrially compostable

Achieving complete biodegradation within approximately 6 months, in accordance with EN 13432 (and internationally ISO 17088).

Home compostable

Biodegrading within approximately 12 months according to EN 17427 for carrier bags and the TÜV Austria certification scheme for plastic materials.

Soil biodegradable

with complete mineralization within approximately 24 months, in compliance with EN 17033 for mulch films (and internationally ISO 23517), as well as DIN CERTCO or TÜV Austria certification schemes.

In all cases, biodegradation results in the conversion of the material into CO₂, water, and biomass, without the forming of persistent microplastics in the environment.

*Requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation. Test scheme and evaluation criteria for the final acceptance of packaging.

OK Biodegradable Soil Certifications

Compliant with the EN 17033 standard and certified by DIN CERTCO, Mater-Bi biodegradable mulch film was also the first material in the world to obtain the “OK biodegradable Soil” certification issued by TÜV AUSTRIA.

Soil biodegradability certifications guarantee complete biodegradation within approximately 24 months, in accordance with EN 17033 and ISO 23517 standards, as well as the absence of toxic effects on the soil.

Certification under Fertilising Products Regulation (EU) 2019/1009

Mater-Bi mulch film can also be certified in accordance with the EU Fertilising Products Regulation 2019/1009, and therefore classified as an inorganic soil improver capable of contributing to the maintenance and enhancement of soil properties.
This classification may enable access to incentives and tax benefits, including reduced VAT within Italy.

Supply Chain Certification

Novamont obtained certification in accordance with ISO 14067 (the international standard defining requirements, principles, and guidelines for quantifying and reporting the climate impact of products, known as Product Carbon Footprint – CFP). This made Novamont the first company in the plastics sector to establish a third-party verified Carbon Footprint calculation methodology for its entire product portfolio.

This certification provides an additional guarantee of the enhanced environmental sustainability of biodegradable and compostable bioplastic solutions, as well as of the quality and reliability associated with the Mater-Bi brand.

eLabel! Certification

Mater Bi was the first material to obtain the eLabel! certification, the multi-label initiative promoted by Kyoto Club to recognize environmental excellence and innovation in products and services. The certification provides transparent qualitative and quantitative information, enabling consumers to make immediate and informed evaluations.

The eLabel! certification verifies the environmental performance and innovation level of Mater-Bi based on clear and objective criteria, including: the content of renewable plant-based raw materials, the sustainability of those raw materials, greenhouse gas emissions, recovery and end-of-life management options, and biodegradability in natural environments in the event of uncontrolled release.
