‘Two fires a day’ from electrical waste prompts call for new WEEE collection services

The British Metal Recycling Association (BMRA) is calling for the implementation of kerbside collection of WEEE across the UK. It says Defra needs to introduce new rules to guide local authorities in safely collecting waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

The kerbside collection of WEEE is already available in several local authorities such as North Lincolnshire.

A report by Material Focus suggested that 90 per cent of 60 local authorities surveyed see fired caused by batteries as ‘an increasing problem’.
