Bayer Crop Science and Novamont experiment with Mater-Bi twines and clips to reduce plastic waste in agriculture

Novamont Iberia and Bayer CropScience have collaborated in a one-year experimental study carried out in the Spanish greenhouses of El Ejido, in the region of Almería. The aim was to solve the problem of the end-of-life of agricultural waste by using cords and clips made of Mater-Bi, the compostable bioplastic developed by Novamont.

Used for trellising tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and melons, the Mater-Bi equipment has proven to meet the requirements of toughness, strength and flexibility throughout the cultivation cycle, even in extreme weather conditions. At the end of the growing season, these tools were collected with vegetable waste and treated in an industrial composting plant to produce a high quality compost.

The new compostable devices, which have a carbon footprint certified according to ISO 14067:2018, have simplified the management of plant waste, eliminating the need to separate plastics and reducing the accidental accumulation of plastics in the soil.

Mater-Bi, the result of more than 30 years of research and innovation by Novamont, is a product that is constantly evolving towards greater sustainability and circularity.
