At Marca 2024, Novamont presented the new Mater-Bi for thermolaminated cellulose trays and coffee capsules recyclable even in home composting.

In the 2024 edition of Marca, Novamont presented the results of its research and development on the Mater-Bi bioplastic, destined for the production of food trays and coffee capsules.

The new grades of Mater-Bi will enable the production of films for thermolamination (liners) and heat sealing of cellulose food trays, offering various technical performances and reducing environmental impact: container waterproofing (without the use of PFAS), thermal resistance, gas barrier for packaging in modified atmosphere and extended shelf-life, facilitated opening, industrial and home compostability, and recyclability in the paper supply chain.

Furthermore, thanks to the collaboration with G. Mondini SpA, a leading company in the production of machines and complete lines for food packaging, Novamont can offer tailor-made packaging solutions to the food industry, along with additional services such as product development, technical validation testing, assessment of environmental performance, compostability testing according to EN 13432 standard, and tools for environmental communication.

The new grades of Mater-Bi enable the production of various types of compostable capsules, with three transformation technologies and different levels of oxygen barrier to meet the diverse needs of the market:

  • Injection-molded Mater-Bi capsules
  • Thermoformed Mater-Bi capsules
  • Thermolaminated cellulose pulp capsules with Mater-Bi film liners, also recyclable in home composting.
