European Standard EN 17033
Plastics – Biodegradable mulch films for use in agriculture and horticulture – Requirements and test methods
EN 17033 (Plastics — Biodegradable mulch films for use in agriculture and horticulture — Requirements and test methods) defines requirements for thermoplastic biodegradable mulch films used in agriculture and horticulture.
It applies to films designed to biodegrade in soil without causing negative environmental impact. The standard defines test methods and evaluation criteria for biodegradation, ecotoxicity, film properties, and composition, as well as requirements for packaging, identification, and labeling.
TÜV Austria Certification – OK BIODEGRADABLE SOIL
Certain Mater-Bi grades used for specific applications, such as agricultural mulch films, have obtained TÜV Austria OK biodegradable Soil certification and carry the reference number S0001.
The OK biodegradable Soil label guarantees that a product is fully biodegradable in soil, with complete mineralization within approximately 24 months, and without negative environmental impact.
The certification applies to:
– all raw materials
– all components and intermediates
– all finished products
The main references are EN 13432 and EN 14995, adapted for soil biodegradability requirements.
Certification under Fertilising Products Regulation (EU) 2019/1009
Mater-Bi grades for mulch films comply with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, as amended by Commission Delegated Act (EU) 2024/2787, regarding the inclusion of mulch films in Component Material Category CMC 9 (polymers other than nutrient polymers), and have obtained EFCI certification with reference numbers DE.5271 and DE.7281.
Mulch films can be registered as “inorganic soil improvers” (Product Function Category PFC 3), in line with the EU Fertilising Products Regulation 2019/1009, allowing CE marking and EU-wide commercialization using certified Mater-Bi grades.
