Food Packaging Products
Mater-Bi bioplastic is the ideal choice for food packaging. It adapts to all technical and commercial requirements for both rigid and flexible packaging, including barrier and non-barrier solutions, ensuring the preservation of organoleptic properties and shelf-life performance comparable to conventional materials.
Thanks to their biodegradability and compostability, Mater-Bi food packaging products can be disposed of through separate organic waste collection after use, representing a solution for all those food packaging items that cannot currently be recycled.
Mater-Bi food packaging products are compostable in industrial facilities, with complete biodegradation within approximately 6 months, in compliance with EN 13432 (as well as ISO 17088).
Paper and Bioplastic
Mater-Bi bioplastic can also be combined with paper, enabling a wide range of products that offer advantages in end-of-life management. These include the possibility of recycling not only in composting facilities but also within the paper recycling stream, as well as reducing the overall environmental impact of packaging.
In specific application areas, paper products coated with certified compostable Mater-Bi bioplastics allow food residues to be disposed of through organic waste collection, reducing contamination in the paper recycling stream in the case of soiled packaging and preventing cross-contamination in the organic fraction, while also avoiding the generation of persistent microplastics.
Some paper products combined with Mater-Bi are also certified as HOME COMPOSTABLE by TÜV, a certification that confirms compostability in domestic environments in accordance with recognized international standards.
Among the products that can be made with paper and bioplastic:

Trays or containers for ready meals and short-shelf-life foods, produced using extrusion coating or thermo-lamination technologies of Mater-Bi film onto cellulose pulp and/or cardboard

Counter paper for food products, flexible packaging for food service and fast food, and single-dose sugar and salt sachets made from lightweight paper laminated with Mater-Bi
- —
Single-use food applications with high oxygen and moisture barrier properties, as well as cups for food service and vending, resistant to both hot and cold liquids.
Capsules for coffee and beverages
Mater-Bi bioplastic is also ideal for the production of capsules. Thanks to new grades and compatibility with three processing technologies, Mater-Bi offers different levels of oxygen barrier to meet various market requirements:

Cellulose pulp capsules laminated with a film (liner), also recyclable through home composting.
Mater-Bi capsules are biodegradable and compostable and are suitable for food contact applications such as coffee, tea, and herbal infusions, in compliance with Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 concerning plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. They also ensure a minimum plant-based raw material content of 60%, which can be increased up to 100%.
