Mater-Bi: the first biodegradable mulch film certified as an inorganic soil improver under EU Regulation

#Research and Development

The Mater-Bi mulch film has obtained certification of compliance with the EU Fertilising Products Regulation 2019/1009, becoming the first biodegradable-in-soil mulch film to be officially recognized as an inorganic soil improver under European legislation.

Used in agriculture for weed control, the Mater-Bi mulch film biodegrades directly in the soil and, at the end of its lifecycle, does not require separate disposal.

Under the Regulation, the Mater-Bi film can be classified as a fertilising product whose function is to contribute to the maintenance and improvement of the soil’s physical and chemical properties, structure, and biological activity.

The Mater-Bi mulch film has demonstrated that it does not accumulate in the soil, does not release persistent microplastics, and does not cause ecotoxic effects in the environment. Its biodegradation occurs through the action of naturally occurring soil microorganisms, which convert the material into carbon dioxide and water.

The use of biodegradable Mater-Bi mulch films offers a solution for more sustainable agriculture, helping preserve soil fertility and maintain organic carbon content in soils.

Novamont has also committed to voluntarily applying the stringent criteria of the EU Fertilising Products Regulation to the development of Mater-Bi grades used for shopping bags, fruit and vegetable bags, and many other applications.
